Where to watch True Detective in the UK comes down to two services: NOW and Sky. All four seasons are available on NOW with an Entertainment Membership, and Sky customers can access them through Sky Atlantic and HBO Max via Sky . Netflix is not an option, and Prime Video only sells individual episodes rather than offering the series as part of a subscription . This guide sets out exactly what is on each platform, what it costs, and the one thing to know before you start season four.
The Short Answer: NOW and Sky
If you want to stream True Detective in the UK legally, these are your routes.
NOW (formerly NOW TV) is the standalone streaming service. An Entertainment Membership gives you access to all four seasons. Season 4, Night Country, streams weekly with that membership, while Seasons 1 to 3 are also included . NOW’s own listings confirm there are four seasons available on the platform .
Sky customers get True Detective through Sky Atlantic and HBO Max via Sky. Sky’s official page states that Season 4 is available on Sky Atlantic and HBO Max, and that all episodes of Series 1 to 3 are available on HBO Max via Sky . Sky customers with Sky Ultimate TV and eligible Sky Q packages get HBO Max Basic with Ads included as standard .
The two services are related. NOW is the streaming arm that does not require a satellite dish or a long contract, while Sky is the full pay-TV package. If you already have Sky with the right package, you do not need a separate NOW subscription to watch the show.
What Is Available on Each Platform
The table below sets out the season-by-season availability based on the official listings.
| Season | NOW | Sky / HBO Max via Sky | Prime Video |
| Season 1 | Yes (Entertainment) | Yes (HBO Max) | Buy episodes only |
| Season 2 | Yes (Entertainment) | Yes (HBO Max) | Not confirmed in sources |
| Season 3 | Yes (Entertainment) | Yes (HBO Max) | Not confirmed in sources |
| Season 4 (Night Country) | Yes (Entertainment, weekly) | Yes (Sky Atlantic, HBO Max) | Buy episodes only |
The Prime Video listings show Season 1 and Season 4 available to buy episode by episode, with a subscription option mentioned at $9.99/month for Season 1 . That is a US pricing reference and not the UK route. For UK viewers, NOW and Sky are the practical options.
What About Netflix and Other Services?
Sky’s own page states plainly: “True Detective is not available to watch on Netflix” . That settles the most common question.
Other services do not carry the series as part of a subscription in the UK. The show is an HBO production, and in the UK those rights sit with Sky and its streaming sibling NOW. If you see a listing on another platform, check whether it is a purchase option rather than a subscription inclusion before you commit.
The One Thing to Know Before Season 4
True Detective is an anthology series. Each season has a different cast, a different setting and a different story. You do not need to watch Seasons 1 to 3 before Season 4 .
Season 1 stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana detectives investigating a ritualistic murder. Season 2 stars Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn in California. Season 3 stars Mahershala Ali in the Ozarks across three timelines. Season 4, Night Country, stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in Alaska, investigating the disappearance of eight men from an Arctic research station .
The anthology structure means you can start anywhere. If you want the most acclaimed entry point, Season 1 is the usual recommendation. If you want the most recent and the one with the highest viewing figures, start with Season 4.
A Note on Season 5
A fifth season has been confirmed, with showrunner Issa López returning. She has said it will feature “different characters, different setting, different story” . One source suggests a 2027 release window, though this is not confirmed by Sky or HBO in the search results . There is no UK streaming information for Season 5 yet, because it has not been released.
